Building the Set!
For our project, my partner and I are diving headfirst into the glorious chaos of a 70s-themed romantic comedy. Our story revolves around those painfully awkward crushes we all know too well, set on a retro ranch. With a female lead trying her best to impress a clueless ranch worker, we’re in for a ride filled with hilarious mistakes and sweet moments.
How Are We Going to Do This?
To bring this 70s vibe to life, we're transforming my partner's cousin's ranch with simple but impactful set designs. For the exterior, we'll sprinkle some vintage magic with old bicycles, metal lawn chairs, and fairy lights around the porch. I'll include a photo gallery of these props so you can see the retro charm in all its glory.
I have an old bicycle that’s been gathering dust in the garage. To give it a fresh, retro look, I'll add some 70s-inspired elements. A basket on the front, retro-style stickers, and a colorful bell will work wonders to bring out that vintage charm. This revamped bike will be a perfect addition to our ranch set, echoing the iconic style of the 70s.
Steel chairs have been a staple in my parents' home for years. Their timeless design is already quite fitting, but to enhance their retro appeal, I'll add colorful cushions with bold 70s patterns, such as floral or geometric designs. These chairs will effortlessly blend into our 70s-themed set, providing both authenticity and comfort.
I recently bought fairy lights for my room, and they’ll be perfect for our project. To give them a more 70s vibe, I'll incorporate them into macramé hangings or drape them around plants and furniture. Their soft, warm glow will add a magical, nostalgic charm to our set, tying everything together beautifully.
Inside, the living room will burst with bold-patterned cushions on our existing furniture and houseplants that make you feel like you're in a jungle. We're keeping it simple and efficient by focusing on easy-to-add elements that bring out the 70s theme without going overboard. Think of it as “70s chic on a budget.”
The attached picture showcases vibrant throw pillows that my parents have had forever but no longer use. With their diverse colors and bold patterns, they are perfect for adding a touch of 70s flair to our set. These pillows will effortlessly brighten up any space and contribute to the overall retro ambiance.
The attached picture illustrates an array of lush garden plants arranged in a living room setting. Although we may not use the living room for shooting, this is the kind of greenery-filled look I aim to create. The plants will add a sense of nostalgia, making the space feel more authentic and inviting.
For the girl's room, we'll deck the walls with posters of 70s bands and movies, string lights, and macramé hangings. I’ll include a Pinterest board packed with 70s room decor ideas for your own inspiration. Her bed will sport a colorful, patterned bedspread with fluffy pillows, and her desk will be a time capsule of a vintage typewriter and rotary phone.

The room features several vintage movie posters on the walls, each adding a sense of personality and nostalgia. The posters reflect the girl's interests and taste in vintage cinema, bringing a piece of 70s pop culture into the space. These posters not only serve as decorative elements but also help set the tone for the room, making it feel lived-in and authentic.
The attached image showcases the bed, which is a central element in the room. It's covered with a colorful patchwork quilt and multiple pillows in vibrant colors and patterns, creating a cozy and inviting atmosphere. The quilt and pillows add warmth and comfort, making the bed a focus point in the room. This setup highlights how a combination of colors and textures can enhance the retro aesthetic we're aiming for.
A retro phone would complement the room's vintage theme perfectly. A classic rotary or push-button phone in a bright color would add a nostalgic touch. It would serve as a decorative piece that increases the room's overall 70s vibe. I am still wondering how I can find one!
Thoughts
Through these playful and quirky design choices we're aiming to immerse viewers in the vibrant world of the 70s and enhance the dramatic atmosphere of our romantic comedy. Get ready to cringe, laugh, and maybe even dance a little disco.
